The Nova Scotia Public Service Long Term Disability Plan (NSPS LTD Plan) has consistently evolved over the years through the hard work of the staff and the strong governance of the Board of Trustees. We have put measures in place that allow us to be attentive and responsive to the changing needs of our members, and we have modernized our processes to reflect best practices in the sector. New Leadership

Part of our evolution as an organization is new leadership. I have the privilege of continuing to serve on the Board of the NSPS LTD Plan, now as chair. I want to thank outgoing chair George Fox, as well as Trustee William Lahey, for their service to the Board and membership. And I welcome the appointment of Karen Fitzner as a new Trustee as of April 2010.

Balanced Approach

The Board oversees the long-term health of the NSPS LTD Plan. We recognize the need to balance the ability of participating employers to operate with the security of employee protection during long-term illness. We know that our mandate is to protect employees by operating in accordance with the Trust agreement and supporting employees’ safe and timely return to work where possible. We look forward to being able to continue doing so in the face of sustained demand and limited resources.

I’d like to thank the current Board members who have given their time so generously to help foster this mission, and who I now count on to support my efforts in the coming year. We’re fortunate to have so many highly qualified Board and management team members.

I’m looking forward to working with the president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union and the Commissioner of Nova Scotia Public Service Commission (the Plan Sponsors), CEO Charles Bruce, the Board of Trustees and the entire NSPS LTD team in the coming year to continue to put our members at the centre of the Plan. As always, I welcome your thoughts about the best ways for your new leadership to take this balanced approach into the future.
